As a therapist I see people in different levels of emotional distress. Some will ask me what counseling will do to fix their problems. I remind them I am not a magician. I just put the tools on the table. Some pick them up. Some want me to pick them up and do the work for them. Personal responsibility is a significant part of wellbeing. There are things we can all do to feel better emotionally and physically. Two of the most powerful ways to create change are food and exercise. They truly can make things seem better or worse. But no one else can do either for you. A quick walk on a stressful day can be a game changer. A cheeseburger at the end of a long day is guaranteed to make you feel worse. There are plenty of professionals to assist and support you. You will still need to periodically ask yourself, “What can I do to help myself ?”
I shared this, hope that you don’t mind! Thank you for the reminder!! I always feel so much better when I wake up and exercise in the morning, it gets my day started right and then encourages me to eat better through the day because I don’t want to undo the good of the exercise!

This is inspirational. There are people who would be happy with a pill their issues. I’ve heard people get very defensive about how they eat and be in denial about what they consume. I’ve heard people make excuses for not exercising…ever: they don’t like it, they don’t want to sweat, they don’t like group exercises, they’re not self-motivated in the gym, what they’d like to do requires a specific season and location (assuring that it will not be done), etc. etc. Tackling the issues through diet and exercise FIRST is ever so much healthier and lasting! You’re right that those two things are powerful and within our control.

I totally agree. I let life get in the way. But can be as simple as going for a walk.
