One Thing At A Time

Multitaskers drive me crazy! Their anxious energy makes me feel frantic. I typically take a big step back when I encounter their force field. There’s research that proves overdoing it, is not as advantageous as chore jugglers believe. Stanford University discovered that multitasking is less effective than doing one thing at a time. The study concluded that people who attempt to do several things at once, remember less, are more distracted, and have decreased productivity than people who work on one thing at a time. Test it for yourself! Focus on one task at a time. When you’re eating lunch. Eat. When your listening to your partner. Listen. When you’re playing with your kids. Play. Could it be true, that intentional, single actions, in this chaotic world, is the answer to increased productivity and inner peace?

As a notorious multi-tasker (as I brush my teeth, I’m putting clean dishes away), I really appreciate this message. Perhaps I’ll try it and see if it calms my (mild) anxiety….bet it could. It sure makes good sense. Thanks!!!

I think of you as a calm, cool and collected person! Your vibe draws people in! But try it! It can feel so powerful it’s awkward at first. We are so used to people glancing at their phone when they talk to us, that eye contact seems unusual these days. Doing one thing at a time can be a fun experiment!

  2. Good point. Now if only there would be a study on people looking at their cellphones at the dinner table. I hear that a cellphone contains more bacteria than the bottom of a barefoot person’s feet. They should have warning signs posted in restaurants telling that.

    Regards and goodwill blogging.

Love this post! It’s so true. We need to focus more on just being mindful and enjoying the moment. Multitaskers are overrated.

I lived as a multi-tasker for many years and found by really doing some needed soul-searching it was not out of my need to get everything done all at once even though I must say I was quite good at it I do believe it all stemmed from anxiety and not knowing how to face the real issues I had going on in life so I just kept moving and filling my brain up with anything and everything. I actually created my business from it! I was so good at doing everything that everyone else needed in their life when really all I was doing was trying to avoid my own needs…its been 6 years since I have begun my slow mindful walk away from the clutter and others problems to face my own and I have to say living life with a peaceful mindset is much more productive than anything else! Great post! Thank you for this! 🙂

This is a really great thought provoking post. I often wonder if multitasking stems from society’s need to get more stuff done. You might enjoy this post.

  9. I FEEL frantic when I kick into multi-task mode so I totally understand what you’re saying here. Half assed is NEVER as good as slow, steady and FOCUSED!
