Today I am speaking to a group of social workers about their own wellness. They need to be taken away from their phones, clients and computers to get their attention off their incredibly long to-do lists. It was decided we will meet at the beach for Staff Enrichment Day. Social workers are good at helping other people. But not so good at taking care of themselves. Social workers are the unsung heroes. They are on the frontline after tragedy and violence. They are focused on what families and children need. Each day they listen to unspeakable acts. This work takes its toll on people. Social workers are not the only ones who do not practice what they preach. Many people see self care as selfish. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Self care is self respect. Do I have any mothers in the house??? I’m talking to you too!!!
I have been providing domestic violence services for 20 years. I hear numerous stories about abuse on a daily basis. Yet I feel as inspired and energized as I did the day I started. There are many factors that keep me sane. Staying positive, great coworkers, passion for the work, going home to a loving husband, snuggling with my pets all contribute to my ability to stay in the game.
My other secret is… I take care of myself first. I know the best thing I can do for my clients, coworkers and company is to exercise before I get to work. Working out is a powerful way to wipe the slate clean and it provides the inner strength to do what needs to get done. What do you do on a daily basis for wellness? If you didn’t come up with an answer right away, you need a speech on the beach. Start with your belief about self care. We all make time for what we think is important.
This is awesome! I just did a training yesterday for the Parent Leadership Team at my organization, we have been working together for two months and this session turned into a session about stress and self care. I started by asking them to share how their life was over the previous two weeks since we met and as we went around I realized everyone had “stuff” they were dealing with. I shifted our focus for the day so they could talk about how they take care of themselves. They had some great ideas and even started organically supporting each other through their conversations. My favorite part was when I had them make a list of how their partners on that team would know they were stressed, and then a list of what their team could do to help. I think they learned a lot about each other in that short timeframe. A GREAT topic for social workers!

As someone in this profession just coming off a week long vacation with anxiety about catching up on everything, this is a great reminder of why I took the vacation in the first place! It is SO important to remember self-care. The hardest part is trying to keep my mind clear of work things during my workouts so I can keep them as my daily “me” time.

We need reminders we need reminders! It’s easy to get caught up in work and forget about what we need! Take a deep breath and just do your best. No anxiety. It will work out. It always does 🙂

Great post. I like to think of self care like a oxygen mask on a plane “if you don’t put yours on how are you suppose to help others :). You might enjoy this post.

Good call. Primary carers are an example of people so depleted. They need the care of others so they can invest in themselves. Of course when you don’t care for yourself you forget how to do it. This is a great how to guide.
