The Love Bully

There are five beings in my house. Two humans, two dogs and one cat. Everyone gets and gives plenty of love. The Saint Bernard puppy insists on being part of any and all interactions. If my husband picks up the cat, Valentino will cry because he wants to be held. If I hug my husband, V will squeeze between us. If Valentino is outside and doesn’t want to come in, all we have to do is pat the other dog and V will come running to break it up.
We get a kick out of his neediness. It’s predictable and his intentions are obvious. I wonder is he insecure? Was he born this way? Did we do something to create this green eyed furry monster?

Human jealousy is not cute. I think everyone has it to some degree. I believe we each have the power to turn it up or down. We are not jealous because of others. We are jealous because of our perception of the situation.

If you struggle with jealousy, you are not alone. There are simple techniques to get a grip your inner hater.

1.Practice gratitude

2. Don’t seek others approval

3. Don’t compare yourself to others.

4. Focus on what you like about others

5. Express love

I’m not sure if Valentino’s demanding tendencies are set in stone. Will he ever be able to stay put and know he will get a hug too? I just know there’s plenty of love to go around. When you believe that, you will see that too.

  1. Valentino’s neediness is adorable—especially given his bulk. You’re so right, though, that in humans such jealousy is unhealthy. I think it also comes from a “scarcity” view of the world: “If she gets something (food, affection, attention), there will be less for me.” Viewed through a lens of abundance, there’s enough for everyone and the more generous we are the more there will be for everyone. Hmmm…there might even be a political analogy here. Thanks for a great post.

Your dog’s photo is worthy of framing like a portrait. He’s so noble (and needy, apparently)!

True! Some just need a little coaching around how to get their needs met. He’s so damn cute. All he has to do is sit there and we all go to him for a hug❤

Yes, plenty of love to go around! If only our pets could understand that. And humans too! Wonderful post.

  6. My heart melted when I saw Valentino’s pic… I wanted to hug him there and then… I’ve had seventeen dogs, all but two rescued, and the love they give has a particular quality… they know you have rescued them, and their devotion is truly heart breaking…
Valentino is in a class of his own… I used to see what I thought was an old woman ( sixty -odd!) who had a St Bernard. She had had the front seat of her little red car taken out so there was room for her full-gown darling to sit in the back with his head and paws alongside her in the front. And always had a large towel as he dribbled !!!!

He’s even better in person. 17 dogs? That’s a lot of love! Dogs are awesome! I have to force myself to leave the house on the weekends. I want to stay home and snuggle with my pets 🙂
