What The What?

on

Naysayers used to piss me off. I would get caught up in listening to them, then defend myself, followed by self doubt. Do they know something I don’t? Should I believe them? Should I squash my plan?

I’m learning to listen from a different perspective. When people give us unsolicited feedback, it has more to do with THEM than US.

When my husband Chris and I told people, we were starting a wellness studio, there were many questions, that didn’t feel supportive. There was a vibe of, “That will never work.” I can remember my husband and I telling 2 women about our business plans. We were almost knocked over with their pessimistic comments. When we were out of ear shot, my husband mimicked them in the most exaggerated, cynical voice saying, “You’re going to WHAT?” We laughed hysterically! My husband is great at impersonations and bringing humor to every situation. That encounter has morphed into the response, “What The What?” Whenever there is negativity in the air, we joke to each other, “What The What?”

As we share the news that Chris is expanding his horizons by creating unique art to sell, we are getting that familiar disapproving line of questions. You know in your gut when someone is inquiring because they care, or if they are haters. I laugh to myself as I hear Chris saying, “What The What?”
Some people feel threatened, bothered or think they need to give a thumbs down to other people’s dreams. We can’t control that. We can only control our response.

I, too, am a half full kinda person. To the point that I wonder sometimes if my outlook goes through such a rose colored lens that I’m out of touch with reality. So…I have taught myself to listen to all feedback/comments and my very first reaction now is, “Is there any truth in this for me?”. Sometimes there is…sometimes there isn’t. I hope that I’m never too old to hear ways to improve, learn new perspectives, and see the good in change. Sometimes I need to hear those things through a voice that is very different from mine. I have my core values firmly established, so I never waver from those, but I do try to remain open to ‘other’.

You are so right. I have learned so much from other people’s ideas. We are always tweaking our business plans to go with what seems to make people happy. Every once in a while I realize…this comment feels like it’s coming from someone I will never make happy. The question ” Is there any truth in this for me?” is a great reality check. I was a “half empty” person for most of my life. “Half full” feels so much better😊

I think it is a great thing to follow your dreams and go all-out doing something you love. Most of us are too afraid to do that, so we stay where it is safe, even when we hate it. It is those people’s fear talking.

  6. Just go for your dream, it is your life and there will always be people, who never live out their own dreams. These will try to not let others do the same. You can’t use them for anything. To keep them close will just take away your good mood and energy.
